General Section.

How do I get the latest version of ArtRage?

If you have the Free Edition of ArtRage, you can simply download the latest installer from our download page. If you have the Full Edition, you can use the Artrage Updater to update your copy of ArtRage to the latest version. If you have Artrage 2.2 or later, on Windows you'll find the ArtRage Updater in your ArtRage 2 Program group in the Start Menu. On OSX you'll find it in your ArtRage folder. If you have an earlier version of ArtRage, you can simply download the latest installer from www.ambientdesign.com/artrageinstaller.html.

What's in the latest version of ArtRage?

How do I get a new copy of the ArtRage Installer?

If you've lost your copy of ArtRage due to a computer explosion or other unfortunate incident and no longer have the installer, you can download a replacement copy at http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrageinstaller.html by entering your email address, registration key, operating system and preferred language. As with any software downloaded from the internet however, it's definitely recommended to make a backup to a CD or similar to make sure you have an easily accessible copy.

Why does a cat keep appearing in my layers palette?

He's not a bug, honest! That's Tycho, Ambient Design's resident cat, the one who's really in charge of the whole operation. You'll find he occasionally pops up in the layer palette in the background when you're dragging a layer, and can also sometimes be found biting the corner of the About ArtRage window or the update window. He's an elusive creature so most of the time he hides away, ready to make his appearance when it's least expected!

I can't see anything when I paint / All the tools are painting white no matter what colour I choose.

If you take a look at the colour picker to the bottom right of the screen, you’ll see there are two sections to it. There’s the large colour wheel with an indicator in it to choose the basic colour, then to the right of that, a vertical bar, where you select the lightness.

If the indicator in the right hand bar is at the top ( white ), no matter what colour you pick in the wheel, you’ll always get white. Just move the right hand indicator down until the colour in the bottom right corner ( your current colour ) indicates the colour you're looking for.

How do I report a problem?

If you're having a problem with ArtRage which isn't covered in the Frequently Asked Questions or the Support Page, do get in touch with us so we can see what we can do to help you out!

When contacting us for technical support please provide the following information:

  • What the problem is that you're experiencing.
  • What you were trying to do at the time.
  • What error message/s you are seeing, if any.
  • Operating System and version (e.g. Windows XP, OS X 10.3.9).
  • Processor Speed and amount of RAM if possible.
  • Input device (mouse or graphics tablet, please provide make and model if using a tablet).

When contacting us for sales support, please email us from your purchase email account if possible. Otherwise provide your transaction ID and where you purchased ArtRage so that we can verify your purchase.

Updater.

The ArtRage Updater isn't working for me, how do I get updates?

If you experience a problem when updating, don't worry, you'll still be able to update to the latest version. Here are some steps to help you out.

  1. Ensure your internet connection is working. If you can reach our forums the updater should be able to reach the update server.
  2. Ensure that your Firewall is set to allow the Updater to connect to the internet. The Updater uses HTML requests on port 80, just like a web browser, but you may need to set your Firewall to allow the ArtRage Updater application to access the internet.
  3. Confirm that you are using the Updater with the right version of ArtRage. Only the Full Version of ArtRage 2 English, French, or German can be updated at this time.
  4. If you are still experiencing problems, it is possible to simply download the latest version of the entire Artrage installer here. We definitely appreciate hearing about any problems you have had so if possible, consider emailing us to let us know as well, as it will help us to improve ArtRage and the updater.

Does the Updater run constantly in the background?

No. The ArtRage Updater is launched when you ask it to start up, and closed when you quit after doing an update.



Purchases.

What do I get when I purchase from an online store?

When you purchase ArtRage from our online reseller, Kagi, you will receive an email with a registration key and a download link which you can use to download the ArtRage installer. Download and save the file to a convenient location then run it to install ArtRage. On Windows, you will be prompted to enter the registration code from your email partway through the install. On the Macintosh, when you run ArtRage for the first time you will be prompted to enter the key.

What methods of payment do you accept when I go to buy ArtRage?

You can find Kagi's ( the online store ) available methods of payment here. They accept credit card, Paypal, check, money order and a number of other options.

Can I get ArtRage on CD?

When you purchase ArtRage you can either purchase the download only version, or the ArtRage Plus version that comes on CD with a printed manual. The Purchase Page contains both options.

I purchased ArtRage but I haven't received any download info.

If you've purchased from our online reseller, Kagi, and not received an email with the download link and registration key, you can check the details of your purchase by going here https://secure.kagi.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/PQ and entering your purchase information. The most likely cause of not receiving an email is that the email was blocked by anti-spam software or by your internet provider, so do check your junk mail folder and anti-spam software if you have any installed as you may find it there.

How do I change my registered email address?

If you have purchased ArtRage from our online reseller, Kagi, you can change your email address by going here https://secure.kagi.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/PQ and entering your purchase details along with your old and new email address. If you purchased ArtRage from another store or reseller you'll need to contact them to do this. What do I do if I have lost my purchase details or registration key?

If you've purchased ArtRage from our online reseller, Kagi, to recover your purchase details including a lost registration key, head over to https://secure.kagi.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/PQ and enter as much information as you can about your purchase to allow the online store to look these details up for you. If you purchased ArtRage from another store or reseller you'll need to contact them to do this. I have OSX and Windows, do I need to buy a copy for each platform?

ArtRage Windows and ArtRage Macintosh are two separate products, so if you wish to run ArtRage 2 on both your Macintosh and PC you will need to purchase each separately.

Are there discounts for buying multiple copies of ArtRage?

We do provide discounts for bulk orders of ArtRage. Please contact us via support@ambientdesign.com and let us know the number of installations of ArtRage you would like and we'll give you a quote.



System.

What system specifications does ArtRage require?

Windows: Windows Vista, XP, 2k, or Tablet PC. 800mhz processor or faster, and 256 megabytes of RAM.
Macintosh: Macintosh OS X 10.3.9 or later. G4 processor or faster, and 256 megabytes of RAM. ArtRage for OS X is a universal binary.

Why won't ArtRage run on Win98/ME?

Windows 98 and Windows ME lack some features which ArtRage requires, which are present in Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Unfortunately, as a result, ArtRage 2 will not run on these older operating systems.

I get an gdiplus.dll error when I try to start ArtRage on Windows 2000. How can I fix this?

If you get an error message which refers to gdiplus.dll when you try to launch ArtRage on Windows 2000, you can download the related file here from Microsoft's site. When you've downloaded the file, unzip it to your Artrage 2 folder and you should now be able to launch ArtRage.

Can I run ArtRage on Linux?

ArtRage does not support Linux natively but some users have reported being able to run it using Wine. For more information, check in the forums. Note that we cannot support your version of ArtRage if you choose to run it on Linux.



Printing.

When I print I get a black box, what is happening here?

If you are getting a black box instead of your actual image when you try to print, make sure you have updated to the latest version of Artrage. Versions of ArtRage before 2.2 used a high quality stretch function which some printer software seemed not to support. It's also worthwhile making sure you are running the latest printer software. You can download this from the manufacturer's website.



Tablet Support.

When I use my graphics tablet, I am experiencing unusual behaviour such as my paint strokes being offset from the cursor.

If you're using Artrage on Windows and see strange behaviour when using a graphics tablet, try going to the Edit, Preferences menu and selecting "Use Mouse Mode". This is another method of getting information from the tablet and you may find that this makes things work correctly for you. If not, let us know and we'll see what we can do to help you out! ArtRage is responding very slowly when I use my Wacom Graphire 4 tablet in OSX.

In your Wacom pen settings you will see an option called "Enable click sounds". Disabling this should markedly improve the performance!



Photoshop Documents.

Why can't I import my Photoshop documents?

Check that you are not trying to import a CMYK document. ArtRage is an RGB application and does not currently support CMYK. If you are using the Free version of ArtRage you will not be able to import documents with multiple layers as ArtRage Free Edition does not have layer support. We've made a lot of improvements to Photoshop document support but it's always possible that there's a situation we've not seen yet so if you find you're having any problems you can also email us the details as well as your Photoshop document and we'll be glad to take a look for you.
