Who are you? What do you want the internet to know about you?
I am 56 and have been drawing and painting, mostly oil and watercolour, since I was 17. Two years ago I took to iPad painting simply out of curiosity and an interest in learning new things and, since then, I have been discovering the possibilities of using digital apps for creative activity. In these last two years I have tried to develop a new creativity, with digital tools, looking for a personal style, but I’m still very influenced by traditional wet watercolour technique and also by the classical landscapes of some European Romantic painters.
¿Quién es usted? ¿Qué quiere que Internet sepa de usted?
Llevo pintando y dibujando desde los 17 años. Ahora tengo 56. Casi siempre he utilizado el óleo y la acuarela. Hace dos años comencé a pintar en el IPad por curiosidad y por interés de conocer cosas nuevas, y en este tiempo he ido conociendo poco a poco las posibilidades de las aplicaciones digitales para la creación artística. En estos dos últimos años he intentado desarrollar una nueva creatividad con herramientas digitales, buscando un estilo personal, pero sigo todavía muy influenciado por la técnica de la acuarela húmeda clásica y también por los paisajes clásicos de algunos pintores románticos europeos.
Where are you from?
I am from Donostia-San Sebastián, a beautiful city in the Basque Country, Spain.
¿De dónde eres?
Soy de Donostia-San Sebastián, una bella ciudad del País Vasco, en España.
What kind of artist are you? (how would you describe your style and niche?)
I would describe myself as an eclectic painter. Despite the fact that there is always a method of painting and a repetition of themes, when I face an empty screen I try not to control the results and, very often, drawings come out at random. That is one of the advantages of digital art, the possibility of correcting or reinventing the drawing very easily. I like painting landscapes or not very neat scenes, with few details and a certain oneiric atmosphere. I want my open space landscapes to create feelings, no matter how obscure or indefinable.
As a figurative painter, I like painting animals. Painting cats or birds on the iPad with Artrage helps me to improve my digital techniques and it´s good fun for me.
¿Qué clase de artista es usted? (¿Cómo describiría su estilo y su tema?)
No me importa definirme como pintor ecléctico. Aunque siempre prevalece una manera de pintar y siempre hay unos temas que se repiten, cuando me enfrento a la pantalla vacía intento no condicionar los resultados, y muchas veces los dibujos nacen del azar. Esa es una de las ventajas del arte digital, la posibilidad de corregir el dibujo, de reinventarlo con facilidad y con mucha rapidez. Me gusta pintar paisajes o escenas poco nítidas, con pocos detalles y con cierto ambiente onírico. Quiero que mis paisajes de espacios abiertos creen sensaciones, aunque sean oscuras e indefinibles.
Como pintor figurativo me gusta pintar animales. Pintar pájaros o gatos en el Ipad, con ArtRage, me ayuda a perfeccionar la técnica digital y son un divertimento, un placer, para mí.
Do you use other programs or traditional media?
ArtRage for iPad is a good program, but in my opinion it has limitations compared to its big brother for computers. I use other apps for specific needs, but most of my digital paintings are made with ArtRage.
¿Utiliza otros programas o medios de comunicación tradicionales?
ArtRage for Ipad es un buen programa, pero me parece que tiene sus limitaciones respecto a su hermano mayor que se emplea en los ordenadores. Empleo también otras aplicaciones que me proporcionan herramientas para necesidades concretas, pero la mayoría de mis pinturas digitales las realizo con ArtRage.
Why do you use ArtRage?
I use ArtRage because it allows you to easily use mix techniques that are otherwise unworkable in traditional painting. For example, putting strokes of pastel or charcoal over a watercolour or oil wouldn´t be so easy, or so successful, on a canvas or a piece of paper. Besides, being able to correct or undo the drawing, while working on it, is a great advantage for creative development, allowing you to experiment and be more daring.
I like ArtRage for the watercolour tool, especially when used along with the palette knife for the great amount of possibilities it offers. I achieve the effects and results I look for.
¿Por qué usa ArtRage?
Uso ArtRage por la facilidad con que se pueden emplear técnicas mixtas que en la pintura tradicional serían inviables. Por ejemplo, el poder superponer trazos de pastel o de carbón sobre acuarela u óleo son acciones que sobre un lienzo o sobre un papel no dan buen resultado. Además, el hecho de poder corregir y deshacer el dibujo mientras se está trabajando en él es una gran ventaja a la hora de desarrollar la creatividad y permite experimentar y ser más audaces.
Me gusta ArtRage por la herramienta acuarela, sobre todo cuando se utiliza junto a la espátula, porque ofrece una gran variedad de posibilidades. Consigo los efectos y los resultados que busco.
How would you normally paint a picture? What is your process?
I do not use layers when I paint with ArtRage for iPad. I start with a white canvas, then I create the background, ethereal and indefinable, to create the atmosphere from which to develop the rest of the elements. I give great importance to the composition, looking for the harmonious balance of the elements of the drawing, and I try to use colors that are not too intense. All painters know that the finishing touches are very important. I do not do them in the same session; usually I leave them for the following days.
¿Cómo suele pintar un cuadro? ¿Cuál es su proceso?
Yo no empleo capas cuando pinto con Artrage en el Ipad. Parto de una pantalla en blanco. Después creo el fondo, etéreo e indefinido, que crea el ambiente sobre el que desarrollo los demás elementos. Doy mucha importancia a la composición, buscando un equlibrio armonioso de las formas, y procuro no emplear colores demasiado intensos. Todo pintor sabe que los toques finales son muy importantes. No los realizo en la misma sesión, normalmente los dejo para los siguientes días.
What are your favourite ArtRage features?
Undoubtedly, the watercolour and the palette knife are my favourite tools. I also like the airbrush which I had never used in traditional painting but find essential on digital painting.
Least used?
I rarely use oil.
¿Cuáles son sus características ArtRage favoritas?
Sin duda la acuarela y la espátula son mis herramientas más usadas. También me gusta mucho el aerosol. Nunca había trabajado con aerosol en la pintura tradicional, pero en la pintura digital me resulta indispensable.
¿La menos utilizada?
Apenas utilizo el óleo.
Do you have any tips for other artists who might want to do the same thing as you?
I am self-taught in digital art and I cannot advise anybody. I can only say that digital art gives you good tools to experiment and try new things.
¿Tiene algún consejo para otros artistas que quisieran hacer lo mismo que usted?
Soy autodidacta en el arte digital y no puedo dar consejos a nadie. Sólo puedo decir que el arte digital proporciona buenas herramientas para experimentar y para hacer cosas nuevas.
